On Wednesday, the government informed the Lok Sabha that nearly one-fourth of the food samples examined by the food safety authority, FSSAI, in the previous three years did not meet the required standards.

The food and consumer affairs ministry stated in a written response to a question regarding the amount of adulterated food confiscated between 2014 and 2022 that the FSSAI examined nearly 3.7 lakh food samples between 2019–20 and 2021–2022 and determined that 90,473 of these samples were "nonconforming."

A research study by the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD) revealed that almost 50% of the 495 samples of Basmati rice examined by the organisation were not the renowned type. It was discovered that some traders "adulterated" these products with other, less expensive options in order to boost their profits. In most cases, the impurity was less than 15%.
